Perfect weather for a trip out today, after yesterdays storms, so we went to Caldarola to see the Caravaggios and others at Le Stanze del Cardinale in the main square ( ends 12th Nov) and then on up to Castello Pallotta an ancient fortified castle

We have given up on an orto after 6 years of failure and a pointless waste of time and energy....the only things that grow well are tomatoes. But as elliven has pointed out, much more sucessful with the fruit and nut trees and the olives are looking good as well. Ideally it would have been great to have an orto, one of the things we were looking forward to when we moved here after having had allotments in the UK, but climate and soil (however enriched) have been our downfall. Have given the last of the failed lettuce to the eggless chicken (another mistake!) and next year we wont bother......so there!Â
My orto is as ever a dismal failure (apart from the tomatoes) raised beds and improved soil, but nothing thrives, have given the limp lettuce to the eggless chicken (another failure...hasnt laid in years) dont know where we go wrong. On the plus side looks like a bumper crop of olives this year and all the herbs are doing well. So much for the good life.
FromNowOn......I love your post title......! sorry cannot advise on camping sites.

Great that this has kicked off some good ideas...have just returned from the neighbours with eggs and lettuce, Maxine my cake baking skills are lacking but will buy them shortbread biscuits from the Little British Food Shop in Servigliano, last time I was there italians were in buying bacon! Pamela I loved your post...made me think again about why we live here.Â
Written somewhat tongue in cheek, following on from my post last night re heating. But it did occur to me that members living in Italy might like to share experiences of living here on a budget. Any advice most gratefully received!.
Actually oldand bold, we have 2 combi boilers, one for the house and one for the apartment...which are great in the warm/hot months....today is 30c plus!. However acknowledge that gas is just too expensive, hence wood-burning stove in the house, apartment not let in the colder months. Its all very well to say heat pumps and solar are the only way, but the initial outlay is beyond the means of many, and you work with what you have got. Internal shutters and other methods, much debated on this site b/f work well. Not everyone has shed loads of cash!.
will pm Viking......have to say will never get my vote. But not appropriate to post on an open forum.
