After my success answering Annec's question, its my turn. However, I鈥檓 not clever enough for an 鈥樈焯免 question 鈥 so I鈥檒l go for one with a 鈥楪reek鈥 connection insteadI鈥檓 a 鈥榮ad鈥 man who likes numbers.
This route is an amalgam of ones I鈥檝e tried in the past, when I had the time available [it will probably add at least 2 or 3 hours, and possibly more, to the normal journey time.] 听 Usually, when crossing Switzerland I do the motorway route听 [Mulhouse - nip into Germany for the 鈥淏asle Bye Pass鈥 鈥 then Lucerne 鈥 St Gotthard Tunnel 鈥 Italy], but for a really scenic route, I would suggest the following options 听 Motorways as far as Lucerne, then a few km after passing Lucerne take the A8 towards Sarnen and Lungern.听 Off onto a minor road to Meitingen 听and then up the Grimselpass [on the 6-11 road] 听to Gletsch.听 At Gletsch you then have the option of either;- 听Left 听[my preferred option] -听 听[on the 19 road] to the Furka Pass and on the St Gotthard Pass [great views and a coffee shop at the top] and onto the motorway to Milan passing Lugano, or 听Right听 -听 [again on the 19 road] to Brig [Interesting drive 鈥 but you miss the panoramic views on the other option], through the Simplon Pass and onto the motorway near Domodosola and thus on to the motorway [passing Lake Maggiore on your left] to Milan or Genova. 听 Hope this helps
You'll find lots of info here.听听 For example, if you do a search on driving to Italy you'll find lots of advice on the various routes to take. Interesting blog
You could try sending 听 a PM听 -听 he seems to have a van that does the trip now and again.听 听Also 听says [in a previous posting] that听he will be driving from Sardinia to UK at the end of Oct and returning in Nov. He has a transit size van
"i can only do 350 miles on a tank of diesel and this doesn't include towing i have a few Jerry cans but it doesn't seem to be a realistic option ..........As i would need over 10 cans to get to Italy." But if you take the Luxembourg - Besancon - Aosta 听route听I detailed above, and filled the tank听at the service station just before you leave Luxembourg听- you'd only need to get about an extra听100 - 200听miles worth of Diesel [5 to 10 gallons max - 2x5 gallon Jerry cans] even allowing for towing Or am I missing something?
