1842 Milan

I am thinking about making a weekend shopping trip to Milan in early December. I have flown into the major airports of Milan area before, but i know very little about the city itself. I have checked out different hotels on various websites, but you never know too much about whether they are in areas best avoided. I do as a habit avoid staying in the immediate vicinities of central railway stations, as many times these can/ seem to be dodgy areas.
I have stayed in a lovely hotel in Bergamo before, but is it worth staying here & going by train into Milan? Any suggestions? Also, does anyone have any restaurants they can recommend? I am looking for a reasonably priced hotel.... all that shopping won't leave me with much of a budget!!!! Any advise will be welcome, thanks!

If you want to stay in central Milan, it seems cheap hotels are fairly few and far between. We stayed in the Sheraton Diana a few weekends ago for one night. Very nice, very comfortable, fantastic bar and restaurant, wonderful breakfasts and an easy walk to the shops and main attractions. However, not particularly cheap at approx £125 per night, per room. But hey, it was one night and it was a treat for my wife. I'd certainly go back.

Can recommend the Jolly hotel in Bergamo and its restaurant, last time I tasted apple risotto there, The Juventus football team were eating with us! There is a fab pizza place just down the rd from it,big q's every night! good shopping too.Who needs Milan?

having read the replies, can i say a thank you. Ironically, it was the Jolly hotel in Bergamo where i stayed, & likewise it was one that i would also recommend to anyone, and from the description given, the pizza restaurant just round the corner was the same one that i ate at, it had a very good selection of toppings, one i seem to remember had pears as one of the toppings!

This may be too late, but last March our group had a long weekend in Milan and we stayed at the Hotel Sanpi. It is 4 star, close to the metro, in a good area and we could not fault it. We paid 90 Euros per room, although the rate may be higher by now. I think it was cheaper to book online.
