Send them a cheque, recorded delivery and request a receipt, BUT, best by far is,

you move over full time, then you can pay in the post office and sit in the bar having a coffee and an ice cream :D (sorry......)

Cheques do disappear and the post is unreliable often. Sometimes it can take two weeks to arrive. You may find you can pay rifuti next time you are in Italy - look at the payment date. Otherwise you could pay online with internet banking or pay by eurogiro via Alliance & Leicester or an expensive SWIFT PAYMENT. All you would need woul be the IBAN details and your account number.

GeorgeS - You have no idea how much I would like to be living there full time!!! Unfortunately the wherewithall to do so is sadly lacking at present, so I have to slog away here whilst plotting and planning the final escape. Think I'll take your advice and send a recorded delivery cheque. The Comune were the only ones to consent to sending bills to the UK so I feel they should be paid on time (15th October 1st rata) Next time I'm out is Christmas and the whole year has to be paid by 15 December. I'll just have to make sure I empty as much rubbish as possible into the bin to get maximum value!!!

Thanks for your reply Cassini. Problem is they don't provide any bank details at all neither Swift or IBAN numbers on their counterfoil. I think I will take GeorgeS' advice and post a cheque and hope for the best. Maybe if more people used the post it would be more reliable. Fingers Crossed!

I think I have an idea how much you want to be here, been there... When the time is right.... LOL, can just see the ryanair clerks as you try to convince them it is essential to take 23 bags of rubbish on board as carry on bagage :D

If you have a bank account in Italy, try and ask your bank to set up a direct debit for you. Often the rubbish collection is organised by local companies who are different in every area, but most of them will offer this facility.
This way there is no problem with post/cheques and the bills will be paid automatically.

Hi there, our experience of organizing direct debit payments is that its necessary to ask the refuse provider , or whoever- to set up the d.d., NOT THE BANK, i.e. the opposite to what one does in U.K. We have arranged for all our bills to be sent to U.K. without problems, and all payments are made by d.d. from our ½ûÂþÌìÌà bank a/c.

We send regularly cheques through the post the only vital thing is to send it priority mail (2/3 days) make sure you right non trasferibile on the cheque then it has to pass through the bank etc.ps. never had a cheque lost or anything else happen. The only problem with all that is that you will have to make sure you obtain a stamped receipt because without that they could come back years later with demands for payment which would be increased with interest,fines etc.

If you are not actually living in the house do you need to pay the tax.Can you opt out of collection after all its possible to deal with about 80% of our rubbish here by recyling and composting so we have only a little bag every now and again..it might even make it as hand luggage!! Ryan air might object .

Sorry,we were mixed up when replying earlier, in Italy it is, as we said, the opposite way round to England, in Italy you ask the bank to do the business, not the supplier.

No Becky - I'm pretty sure it's not possible to opt out of paying. After all, it's just another form of taxation. The council tax bill here in the UK shows a breakdown of the various services covered by the tax, rubbish collection being one of them, and although people sometimes refuse to pay some or all of it because they have a grievance of some kind, they are usually taken to court and sometimes to prison if they are determined not to pay. I content myself with the fact the the ici and rubbish tax together come to loads less than my council tax here.

having read the forum on rifiuti am I correct in thinking this bill will be posted to me - not like the ICI where I have to get the forms from the post office- not paid these for last year yet and not returning until the spring. Does anyone know someone who helps people in Abruzzio with this sort of property management??I just cant come over because of work at the moment and my ½ûÂþÌìÌà is still not brill
