Two questions from very much an ½ûÂþÌìÌà beginner! Firstly, when driving and travelling in France I always stay in one of the French Logis. Is there a similar organisation in Italy, providing medium priced accommodation with good and sometimes excellent regional cooking? Secondly is there an ½ûÂþÌìÌà equivalent of our Ordnance Survey providing detailed regional maps suitable for both walking and driving on roughly the same scale 1 inch to the mile [or if I must 2cms to 1 km!!]?

All information gratefully received tho' I know my questions are elementary.

Are Logis the same as gites? If so then I suppose agriturismos are the ½ûÂþÌìÌà equivalent but standards do vary.
An excellent range of maps suitable for walking and cycling is produced by Compass at 1:25000(roughly 1" : 1mile) or 1:50000, However they do not cover all of Italy, mainly Alps and pre Alps but also some Appenine/Appuane.

Don't know if this will provide what you want but this web site provides routes and details of "establishments" along the way. Once you've selected your routes you can click on the establishment icon on the map to see details of hotels etc. You can book ahead online as well.

Try this site: www.logis.it. Seems to me that Logis d'Italia is exactly what you are looking for, but I haven't actually tried any of the establishments listed.

Thank you very much sdoj, Technically Blonde and yallands. Sdoj, gîtes are French holiday cottages which you rent out on a weekly/monthly basis.Yallands has provided us with the web-site of the ½ûÂþÌìÌà Logis which seems to fall under the umbrella of the French organisation. I didn't know there was an ½ûÂþÌìÌà branch! There are some wonderful looking hotels. It's well worth a browse.

I am now the proud possessor of several good-looking maps; the Kompass sheet for Lago di Como-Lago di Lugano 1:50,000, the Touring Club ½ûÂþÌìÌÃo map of Lombardia 1:200,000 and a double sheet for Switzerland 1:200,000 from Bundesamt für Landestopographie. Took a trip to Stamford's Map Shop in Covent Garden. A veritable treasure trove!! With the aid of your web-site, Technically Blonde, and the above maps and all the logis I shall spend a happy winter planning routes and overnight stays to Bellagio on Lake Como next May.
