Just discovered Carovigno has a kebab shop. Under the camera there is a sign advertising it :p Will try it out next time.

We have eaten at ;

La Gardenia : Via Rimini San Vito....very quiet this time of year ( mind you Elaine will liven it up !!) ...only open evenings this time of year...can eat outside in the summer......assume it is still open.

Il Vulcano : San Vito : Food good , service not so good.....we all got our courses at different times !!!! Always plenty of locals in there which is usually a good sign. Open for lunch and dinner.

Mangiamo Sotto Mille Stelle....or something like that !!!! Just off the San Vito to Specchiola road ....just before you go over the Superstrada ..on the left as you go towards Specky !!!-only been once and was not impressed with the food ...and the chef and waitress ( think it was his wife) had a huge row and she threw down her pinny and stormed out ....very atmospheric !!!!Nice location though and was getting packed as we left !!!...will give it another try.....think it might be closed at this time of year.Sat outside in the summer...nice setting.

Torre San Sabina:Carmelas' ( I think??) smallish restaurant on right just before you get to harbour. Excellent meal ....nice cosy atmosphere...thoroughly enjoyed it. Was open midweek evenings a few weeks ago.

Torre San Sabina : The Fish restaurant actually on the harbour ( if you get a window seat-which we did - you feel as if you are actually in the harbour .. :D ..or on a boat !)..excellent Antipasti and fresh fish...pricey by comparison to rest but absolutely heaving for Sunday Lunch...think you would need to book if more than 2....think only open for Sunday Lunch.

Emmezeta !!!...good tasty cheap lunch....i.e pasta dish followed by Mussells and bread ...delicious !!!

Flumps ( or something like that !!!-useless at names eh ?)Auchan,Mesagne....Good reasonable priced mixed grill -huge :D , pasta dishes and good selection of Primo piatti and Secondo Piatti ...!!!...nice desserts ..self service, nice staff.

McDonalds : Auchan, Mesagne......well what can I say...we were desperate !!!! ;)

Caravigno does that have any good troffs?
Gosh I never thought about the 'sea-side' stoop!
Thanks for the suggestions Alex & Lynn :D
Is this why the italian washing powder has made all my clothes shrink

Yes there is a Chinese in Ostuni. Haven't been yet, but it is in the new town.Going to our place at Christmas will check out the street name .Love the place have had our holiday home for nine months now.Get there as often as we can split our hols between Ostuni and Lake Como. Roll on retirement !

Nooo noooo not chinese yuck, toe nails in batter and chicken feet in MG!!!
Miss italian pizzas they are just not the same in blighty. :p

Still us Brits have curry so all is not lost :D

...Alex is a dab hand at the ole Indian Food......perhaps we should open a take away !!!! :D

Carovigno has supposedly got some good eateries. We ate at a place on the main road that runs through town - can't remember what it was called but if you're coming from San Vito it's on the first corner on your left after the traffic lights as you enter Carovigno. Big and buzzy pizzeria, was packed when we went on a Wednesday night (all locals, obviously). Vincent recommended a pizzeria called Il Grottino, Piazza della Liberta 9, Carovigno. Says it looks nothing from the outside, but nice inside (vaulted ceilings etc - clue's in the name).

(This is obviously not a reply just for Elaine, as she was there with me!)

Its just we are greedy fat pigs  :p  :p

Hi Elaine and Kate,

We went to Hostaria San Filippo in Carovaigno. Its in the Piazza up a little side street, behind the palm trees. Wonderful food, the full works for E44 for both of us.

Or

Miles away but really really nice if you like fish. Ristorante La Barca di Ciro, Marina di Pulsano, Taranto. Twice the cost, but spent all of a warm Sunday afternoon just eating and then went and flumped on the sandy beach, just a little further down from the ristorante. We were very fat piggies too! :D

I can second the Hostaria San Filippo in Carovigno. It's a very friendly, family run place patronized mostly by locals. I had the typical 20 odd plate antipasti taster option. That, plus wine, set me back 10 euro. Coffee was on the house. I'd definitely go back.

So much great information in this thread --- thanks! I've printed it out and I'll be sure to eat my way through this list -- I'll let you know how it goes! :D

Chez Nous (pizzaria just off roundabout with Bridal shop on corner) owner used to work in London. Great food and very reasonable. The Castle up in the old town, always good, plus The Cantina (seems to be open lunchtimes but not necessarily in the evening) up in the old town. First restaurant we visited last year when we bought our house. Great place, great food. Not to be confused with the other Cantina (slightly different spelling I think) down in the new part of town. Another good one, but more modern and bit more pricey.

Thanks guys I've run this thread out, loads of good places to eat I can feel my belt tightening as we speak  :p  :p

What about taxi's, we know a superb taxi bloke but he's in Ostuni, we could do with a number for a taxi in San Vito or Carovigno, chears me dears :p

After arriving late at night on the Bari flight, Rosella from the Residence dei Normanni recommended Il Vulcano. The place was empty (11:30pm) and they were only doing Pizzas, but they were good, and the staff were friendly and helpful. I'd definitely go back again, a little earlier next time!

And I can third it! Nice place, nice atmosphere, good food, nice prices. :D

Have to say, that we didn't find La Cantina (off the Piazza) to be a very nice place. Empty. Plastic lining under the tablecloths. Owner/waiter dressed in jeans and a top with the word 'suck' and a huge tongue on it. Most importantly the food was, at best, 'average'. Not a place I'd return to - but just my opinion - others may have had a better experience.

Anyone got any news or info on this???!!! A local taxi would be very helpful! Cheers!

I have 3 numbers for taxis but haven't used them myself :

Angelo (English speaking): 330 964 927
Tommaso : 368 340 1317
Angelo (assume it isn't the same as the first one !!): 347 914 3535

:)

Has anyone tried any of the places to eat listed on the San Vito website here: http://www.comune.sanvitodeinormanni.br.it/turismo/mangiare.asp

The only one I've been to on the list is Il Vulcano.
