1709 Torre Canne

After enjoying a couple of holidays in Martina Franca, we are thinking of returning to Puglia next August to Torre Canne.

The hotel we are thinking of booking has a private beach but we are concerned that Torre Canne may not have enough choice of restaurants or cafe/bars to keep us occupied during the evening.

Although we realise that it will be quieter than Martina Franca, could anyone let us know what we could expect to find.

Also, is there a bus service from any nearby train station?

I stayed in this hotel ,Hotel del Levante some months ago, out of season granted and found the place and apulia in general to be mega shabby! the place seemed stuck in 1970's Magaluf timewarp and not anywhere near a 4 star. The place is a bit of a dump too, very run down.I wouldnt like to have spent more than the 2 days there we did and wouldnt recommend visiting anywhere round the area.I cant understand why so many people seem to want to move there! It was like the wild wild west and we were the stangers who had just rode into town! Just my opinion of course!

Well I like the Hotel del Levante! In fact I spent almost every Sunday there this summer. Living in Martina Franca we find the beaches of Torre Canne get very busy in July & August so we tend to go to the hotel with friends, just for the day. I think most seaside places are sad out of season and as for the area being shabby - you`re right - it is! But having said that you`ve got to remember that it is the `Mezzogiorno` and that it has largely been neglected for various reasons (mainly to do with money and politics). Tourism is relatively new in the area - they`re not quite switched on to it yet! My husband gets very upset about the rubbish blowing round the countryside - but -hey!- Rome wasn`t built in a day! If you want warm friendly people, fantastic food and wines come to Puglia. If you want everything neat & tidy for the toursists but ever-so-slightly artificial go to Chianti (sorry Tuscany lovers - having spent a year in Siena, I do also love that area but feel it has been made a bit over-touristy). To get back to Paul`s question, you may find there`s not enough to do in the evenings just in Torre Canne itself and would probably be better with a car so you can go out & about. Glad you enjoyed Martina Franca!

As I said that was only my opinion,my idea of a nice hotel would be Palazzo Guiderocchi in Ascoli Piceno a 3/4 star, a place where they park your car, carry your bags to your room, make you feel welcome, have a fab restaurant,I could go on, and all in or out of season! I suppose it depends what your used to or perhaps your age group.

There's quite a good hotel between Carovigno and San Vito called Cabrun, 3 star I think, with good facilities. Nice pool area, lovely terrace, big restaurant.

We treated ourselves to a really slap up lunch while we were there. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the food, especially the antipasto (huge portions that just kept coming) was absolutely delicious. Only problem I can see out of season is that the dining room is huge and can seem quite empty. Only one other table eating lunch mid week.

I should imagine that Torre Cane is bustling during July/August, but for touring the area when the weather isn't too hot and the roads empty of traffic, out of season is best.
