1690 beams

Does anyone know a source of beams, preferably old ones, in or near Le Marche? Our architect says that even new beams are almost impossible to find as they now by law have to be guaranteeed so the supply has dried up. Any comments?

i was intrigued by your comment, as our local saw mills are regularly supplying beams for roofing purposes and a friends house is having them put in today under an architects supervision, so nothing strange there are suppliers in Comunanza,San Ginesio and lots of other places depends where you are in the Marche (it's quite a big place you know)..It would be more difficult however to find old beams absolutely suitable right length ,quality, size etc so i'd stick to the new ones get them to hack them with axes ( a fairly standard procedure)and give them several treatments and they'll already be "looking old".....

...sebastiano provides the right answer...we have a good friend here with a manufacturing sawmill.... state of the art ...and he provides beams for not only houses but apartment blocks and larger commercial enterprises.... if your in the south of the marche and you have the time will be pleased to show you the place.... lots of pictures and designs available... the mill is just outside Teramo...which is about 45 mins from ascoli....

dont know why but he loves engand and english..... his family helped in the rescue of a british serviceman in the war and he has visted that family in england since.... he even has a small museum of all the tools his parents and grandparents used to use ...in the past ...as its a family that has been practising this trade for many generations....

should have said the beams are rated to comply with all seismic/building regulations...

old beams... again have to agree with sebastaino...if rplacing one or two ..its worth the effort of searching.. if its a whole roof structure ...better off with newer.... and apart from the colour ...they will be the same...even down to the joinery.... if you choose...

Thanks,Sebastiano and John
