Best Western Hotel Re Enzo in Via Santa Croce - literally 10 minutes walk from Piazza Maggiore (main town square). It's within the old city walls. It's a 3 star and very good quality.
Mealwise, only does breakfast, but there's some great eating places in the streets surrounding it.
I've stayed at 3 different hotels in Bologna all quite near the city centre, but for me I find it's in the nicest location for "real Bologna" and good eating places, and (for the price of hotels in Bologna) good value.

You could also try the Tre Vecchi in Via Indipendenza. We stayed there overnight last year and were very happy with it. Also about 500 metres from Piazza Maggiore and about 250 metres from the train station. Plus it is right next to the square where there is a massive market on Saturdays. Very good bargains, particularly shoes.

You probably all ready know this (chicken&egg situation) but the hotels around Bologna really do seem to be honestly described.Expensive really good, cheap**** beyond the pale.Rooms are almost all 80's** !! It really is go for the most you want to spend closest to the centre! Fantastic city!!! :D :D :D

We have stayed at the Tre Vecchi on two occasions now. Very central and really helpful staff.

Highly recommended.

We organised a group trip to Bologna last month and all stayed at the Tre Vecchi. Note that the rate is considerably lower if you book over the internet. We paid less than £70 per room per night inc. breakfast and it was a very good breakfast! Can I also recommend 2 very good restaurants for excellent local food. One is central and within walking distance of the Tre Vecchi - Trattoria Gianni, Via Clavature, 18 Tel: 05122 94 34
Also, Osteria dei Cavalieri, Viale Oriani 38/2 - Tel 051 346602. You will need to get a taxi to this one, but they offer a wonderful range of local specialities for an all inclusive price of 25 Euros, including wine!

My favorite hotel in Bologna is Il Cappello Rosso , 4 stars, very central & lovely in all senses. Professional staff on duty even if it was New Years. They offered champagne and chocolate plus special rates for the holiday. Hotel Drapperie is also fine, 3 stars, very central but I wouldnt stay again unless they get their staff organized. The cleaning woman prepared our cappuccino (there was no breakfast to speak of ) while she also was mopping and changing beds and dragged the dirty linens right across the floor where we were seated, trying to gulp down our cappuccino!
