Thanks Paola, I like Singer. I own one here in the States, but I didn't know if
I could buy one in Italy with a different electrical system (US uses 120 volts, so I need all new appliances). How about Bernina and Viking? Does anyone own one of these?

I own a Bernina (Virtuosa 150) which I bought in Australia (240v) about 3 years ago and now use it in Canada (120v) with no problems. Just check the back of the machine and it should have a spec label saying 100 - 240v. Then all you will need is a new plug or US/Europe adaptor. Based on experience with Singer and Bernina, I prefer Bernina.

I love using my Bernina overlocker and Elna machine. I would have thought these were available along with familiar names such as Brother, Janome etc. I will try to look in the Sanremo sewing machine shop we drive past in the car at regular intervals but it will be a month before I can report back on brands. On a more amusing note our local ironworker thinks of himself as somewhat of an artist with sculptural forms outside his workshop - recently a Roberts treadle machine has been proudly displayed by the road!

Thank you Gerry and Cassini, Bernina sounds like an excellent possibility!
I like the 100-240 volt feature you mention Gerry. I could bring it to the US and
use it in Italy.
I'm real interested in what you find in San Remo Cassini. That sewing shop sounds like a great find. I wonder if your local ironworker will have some new creative sculpture when you go back? Let me know!
both my mom and my granny own a singer... maybe you can check on ebay and get a second hand one....
