1437 Milan - Venice

My wife, her friend and I will be travelling to Italy for a few days this October (days away!). We have one night in Milan, two in Venice and then home. The problem stems from the fact that since booking the flights and rooms/apartments, we have made a big financial commitment and will have to have a short break, well budgeted.

any advice on

1) Eating in Milan, later in the evening, economically, in October, near the Central station?

2) Economically viable Venice. We have an apartment booked so we could cook in. Cheap sights. Value for euro nights out?

Many, many thanks, wonderful people.

 :) :o

Can't advise on Milan but as I'm sure you're aware, Venice IS expensive. However, if you're willing to wander around away from the main sites, there are lots of nice little reasonably-priced bars and restaurants to be found everywhere.
On my last visit I stayed near the Jewish quarter (come out railway station, turn left, keep walking) and found it fairly reasonable.

I agree with Derek. We visited Venice this February and while I can't remember any names of restaurants (apart from one to avoid - Il Grotto, which had the most dopey waiter!), we found a few cheaper ones away from the main tourist hot spots.

We found that most restaurants have their menu displayed outside and we checked them out while strolling through the city, then deciding where to come back to in the evening.

By the way, the only place I remember is actually close to the bridge where you can see the Bridge of Sighs best, right at the waterfront between the bridte and Piazza San Marco! We sat outside (yep in Feb!) & had a huge pizza for lunch for about Euro 6.00 each! Plus the wine of course which wasn't too much either... we were quite impressed, especially as that's a great point for people watching!!! :D

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the hints. The last time I was in Venice was for one day only (a day trip on an early bus from Garda). It was wonderful but cost an arm and a leg. well, you've got to go the gondola and I personally, as a big Hemingway fan, had to vist Harry's Bar.

LOL No surprise - bang goes your budget... :D

Hope you have a great time.... I for one envy you! Funnily enough, we did a day trip from Venice to Lago di Garda... ;)

I think a 72 hr vaporetto pass is about 22 euros and you can ride on any of the lines as many times as you want - the no 1 or 82 route up and down the G canal is worth doing a few times.
Avoid fish in restaurants - its nearly always pricy. The market near the Rialto bridge is fantastic for fruit and veg and you can buy amazing fish from the fish market just beside it quite cheaply.
Little sandwiches (trappezzini?) in wine bars - lots near Rialto on the San Polo side are delicious and cheap and the restaurants in Cannaregio near the Misericorda are cheaper and used by locals. Un ombra - a small glass of wine knocked back usually at the bar is always cheap and a treat like a glass of prosecco is never much if taken in a more local bar. Do not think of having a coffee or anything else in St Marks Sq at Quadris or Florians - though Quadris do the best boozy hot choc - a Sospiri - in the world if you do fancy a splurge. You can still enjoy the bands though even if you just stand at the edge - loads of people follow the music round the Sq of an evening (only one cafe orchestra plays at a time).
Places like the cemetary island are fascinating to visit and many of the churches cost nothing - recommend checking out the Gesuiti church - its close to the boat stop at Fondemente Nove where you catch the boats to Murano and the Cemetary island. Amazing marble pillars.
Have a wonderful time.

Looks like your best bet is to go direct to Milan - trains at 07.52 and 08.34. Doesn't Ryanair have a shuttle to BGY from there?
Or, could try going to Brescia then bus or taxi to BGY (30 miles).

Good luck

The trains are brilliant but do pre book your seat - I've only done the trip to/from Milan once but it was packed. Bang on time though. Think you can book online too through Trenitalia. They put Virgin to shame for price..
Have a great trip.
