1481 DaMosta's Venice

Like everyone, I have been enjoying DaMosta's "Venice" programme that was on last night (the last in the repeated series!). This final episode looked at the future of Venice & touched on the plans for flood defences.

I note that the plans seem to have been agreed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4292374.stm) and the controversial plans to build a flood barrier will go ahead with a 4.5bn euro project that is due for completion(!) by 2011.

.... will anyone give me odds on completion by 2011?

Hi there,
yes, I was a little concerned after seeing last night's programme, as to how environmentally friendly this proposed project is going to be. :(
I felt a little sorry for Francesco and his family, being that they are Venetians, whose family ties go back a long way. Will he and most important of all his children, will they stay and bring up a new generation of traditional Venetians, to carry on certain family traditions and way of life?? I for one, hope that family trades will not die out all for tourism. :( ( Even though I have been a tourist myself, I have not bought the "tacky" plastic gondolas or masks.
Cannot comment on how long this project will take to complete, but now will suffer withdrawal syptoms, because the series has finished!! I will just have to keep watching each episode over and over again. :p
Ciao
Frances
