Does anyone know if the restrictions on non residents buying a car apply to ½ûÂþÌìÌÃs living abroad ie those registered with A.I.R.E.

The only suggestion I can make is to speak to ACI, google "auto club italia"

I have no idea what the answer to your question is but I would like to know. What is A.I.R.E. ?

ciao ciao

I have no idea what the actual letters stand for, but ½ûÂþÌìÌÃs living abroad are registered with the ½ûÂþÌìÌà consulate and registration gives you certain benefits like being able to vote, when buying property in Italy the tax is charged as if it's your first house and the ICI is charged at the first house rate. the reason I asked about the car purchase is that we assumed we would not be able to buy a car but variuos peaople keep telling us about so and so who lives in Canada has a car here!

I would imagine that it depends on the individual regulations in the foreign country where the ex pat ½ûÂþÌìÌÃs are staying. For example we do not have registered residency in the way that Italy does therefore any foreigner with a driving licence valid for the UK can buy, tax, insure and drive a car here.

I phoned ACI in Rome and was told that as an EC citizen (resident in England) frequently in Italy but not resident that I could register a car in my name at my ½ûÂþÌìÌà address provided I could demonstrate that I had a permanent address in Italy. However, local ACI office say that nothing bar residency would do. This seems to be similar to the confusion over Banca Posta: some people having no problem opening accounts and others been told that without residency it was not possible. What constitutes an "officialised address" ... ownership, rental agreement or as in UK: utility bills going back 6 months? Any thoughts anyone?
