AN AWFUL TRAGEDY

A terrible accident and they are still trying to find victims alive amongst the rubble of the buildings that collapsed. Quite a few people unaccounted for. It looks as if they are successfully emptying the tanks which have not exploded; however, it is a very dangerous procedure. Our thoughts and our prayers are with all these people.
really horrible

A major part of a battle myself and others are fighting on Canvey Island is based around the dangers of existing in the close proximity of gas storage. My wife and I honeymooned in Viareggio and later returned many, many times. Our favourite resort. From here we traced my family roots and years later have bought a cottage near Bagni di Lucca. At home, on Canvey Island, we are in danger of losing a precious piece of greenbelt. A major part of our argument is living close to a Calor Gas installation. Monday evening we spent two hours arguing with our local Councillors and Council Officers explaining the dangers and pointing out their responsibilities if they were to increase the societal risk. Calor operate a LPG plant which attempted to cover up a 17 metric tonnes leak. Canvey has a population of approaching 40,000 people. The plan is to build 1500 more housing units. We made substantial steps in our argument with the council to delay the greenbelt development due to the dangers of gas storage. What a dreadful coincidence to learn the next morning of the loss of so many lives due to possibly the same material. Lessons learned the hard way, unfortunately. But I am still troubled by the timing. The reassurances of safety which are accepted when there is money to be earned.

Good to see you in the Community and I remember reading in the old Forum about your struggle concerning Canvey. We also go quite often from Bagni to Viareggio and to that area to eat some fresh fish in the local restaurants. It is a very busuy area, particularly at this time of the year as it is the access to the Versilia Coast. Unfortunately, nobody realises the dangers involved until a tragedy strikes.
Any trains running?
