Try Stanfords - www.stanfords.co.uk. You can buy them via internet, but they do have a few shops as well, but I don't know where they are - the website should say though .
Good luck

Thanks for the info everyone. I will try the bookshop on Dawson Street first, if no luck there will hit these online retailers that you have indicated.
Over December and January I will be visiting Venice, Rome, Naples and Florence - this being a quick intro tour for my mom who is making her first trip to Italy. We will be visiting her grandfather's home town (thanks to google earth we now know where it is too).
At the end of next year I am contemplating chucking in the job and travelling for a year, and want to give a decent chunk of time to Italy as part of the travelling - this is more what I need the map for - to work out distances between places that I really would like to visit.

Sano
In addition to maps, if you're looking at working out distances and routes I think www.viamichelin.com is worth a look.

street directories?

On the topic of maps, does anyone know of a company that provides the standard street directories (atlante stradale) for ½ûÂþÌìÌà cities. I live in Palermo and for the life of me cannot fine a simple street directory for Palermo and surrounds. All that is on offer are fold out maps and the Tutto Citta (which is useless).
The common response I get is that ½ûÂþÌìÌÃs do not believe in maps. They prefer to stop ever 20 metres in the car and ask for "informazione per favore".
thanks
