Update.
When are you traveling. Neal's just phoned to say the centre of Ostuni is closed to vehicles at the moment but he's found a parking space and had to walk the rest of the way in and unlike the last two time's we've stayed, its BUSY.

A couple I met at my ½ûÂþÌìÌà class have several appartments in Ostuni which they rent out at a very reasonable price. My husband and I are thinking of going sometime soon. What is Ostuni like? Are there a lot of other places to visit nearby? I would be very grateful for any information.

Cheers for that. We're going at the beginning of september, hopefully after the august rush...
we may end up staying just outside the centre anyway.
Ostuni's lovely Jane.

Hi Jane,
Yes Ostuni is lovely , places to visit:
Alberobello, a Trulli village , beautifully preserved and fascinating....tacky tourist shops but that is inevitable -well worth a visit.
Lecce, bit of a drive , but really lovely city with Roman Amphitheatre in Main Square:
the coast is very different as well ranging from rocky to lovely beaches.
Food fantastic, plenty of markets.
There is a safari park, if you like that sort of thing.
Hermits cave ( large -with murals ) near San Vito dei Normanni
Olive oil museum
Vineyards (apparantly a really good one near Brindisi-again we have yet to get there !!)
We are still exploring, after 3 months so, I think you'll find plenty to see !!!
Also further afield, Gallipoli which apparantly is well worth a visit ( not made it there yet !!!!)
At the moment it is definately not too touristy except for the odd main attraction so has real charm.
Hope this helps...I'm sure you'll hear from others who have been here longer than us and know the area well.
Oh- and driving here is a doddle, much better than the UK ! :)

Go to Oria too and visit its superb medieval castle, the Basilica with mummies beneath, the ancient jewish quarter and many other things related with its 3000 years of history.
Oria is only 30km far from Ostuni, just in the middle between the cities of Brindisi and Taranto.
You cannot miss it!!! :)
we're on our way !!!

Would recommend a drive to Martina Franca when you are there - I think it takes you through the Val D'Itria from Ostuni; one of the few areas that has some releif to the countryside in this mainly flat region- though not exactly hilly it is still very pretty.
I found the small centro storico of Martina Franca a very pleasant place to be for an alfresco meal on a balmy evening and to take in the passagiata.
Can also vouch for Gallipoli; again the centro storico is the palce to be which is on its own little island (the new town is not too attractive). It has a nice local beach - clear med sea etc. Dont expect too much by way of architecture but it has nice ambience easpecially if you like fish. Best Beaches are on this side of the heel too. Lecce is lovely and I hear Otranto is worth a visit (I ran out of petrol and didnt make it!)
As an aside can anyone tell me how you get these icons to go where you want them?
All the best
Steve

Parking in Ostuni

Hello
We have our holiday home in Ostuni. Parking is not a problem just think ½ûÂþÌìÌÃ!.The only time that you cant get as close to the town centre ,around Piazza Liberta, is during high season on a Saturday night when they pedestrianise the centre. Even so we have never had a walk of more than 5 minutes.
The only other thing to bear in mind .We arrived on the Saturday evening flight to Brindisi from Stanstead with my daughter and grandson and all the associate baggage.James my husband decided to park as close to the house as he could just for unloading purposes. We put the car on a meter by the park. Put enough euros in to cover until the morning when he could move it. He was just anxious to get th Caffe Centrale for a nightcap actually!!!Anyway we had forgotten that there is an antiques market in this area the 2nd Sunday in every month! We arrived to move the car on the Sunday morning to find it surrounded by antique furniture !!!No cars are allowed in this area during the market. The two guys whose pitch we had taken were so kind .Lots of 'mi dispiaces' from me.One told me the police wanted to remove the car but he realised it was a hire car an probably tourists so told them to leave it.So meter parking around the park on the 2nd Sunday of each month is not advised. Happy holiday Tricia
We've had two separate weeks and found free parking easy. You will not be exactly outside the door of the appartment but on both occations have only had a short walk. My husband should actually arrive in Ostuni at 9pm tonight...........I'm soooooo jeaulous....
