Overnight Stop near Lake Lucerne

07/25/2011 - 05:21

I have just got back from my latest trip to Italy, and thought some of you might be interested to hear about a Swiss hotel that we stayed in on the way down.It is the Hotel Engel in Stans [near to Lake Lucerne, a few minutes from the motorway We arrived in the middle of the village Festival, and the village centre was barriered off, so things were a little hectic. The hotel accommodation was more than acceptable, and the food in the restaurant was excellent [if a little pricey – but what isn’t Switzerland isn’t???]. The breakfast was fine – eat on the terrace overlooking the square. There are several local restaurants [and a Pizza Place] nearby if you want to eat out.I have no hesitation in recommending the hotel – we felt it was great value for money [for Switzerland] at about £100 for a double room B&B. It is well placed fot the Gotthard Tunnel and an early arrival in Italy. I found it on the usual Hotel Finder websites [I like to read the reviews] but they all showed it as full when I wanted to stay – but I rang the hotel direct and booked straight away [no deposit – just pay on leaving]The Festival was called Stanser Sommer, and we were there for the last day – Interesting Acts – Banner waving/throwing accompanied by Alpen Horns – a Jazz band, Yodelling Grannies etc etc – all local. A fantastic evening

Well worth checking out by the sounds of it, and very interesting that you found that the hotel finder website suggested that it was a full (I assume they would ave been allocated a certain number of rooms ?).............I'll mark it as a possible for next time...............not SURE about the yodelling grannies though crying S

Thanks, Alan. It sounds great and very reasonable in price. Regarding hotel bookings, we usually go to Italy via the French Riviera and many times we have found that several hotels look as if they were fully booked on the Web and then, ringing the hotel direct you find that there are vacancies.

Glad you enjoyed your stay Alan H. Next time have a look at Kussnacht, Weggis or Vitznau. All are minutes from the autostrada but situated directly on the lake. (Viervaldvatersee...lake Luzern) and have the "Queen of the Mountains" (Mt Rigi) in their background. Mark Twain described Weggis as the place that he believed to be  "the loveliest in the world".
