My husband & are from the USA & just purchased a vacation home in Calabria. I know I can open a "conto estero" account. What is the best way to bring in a few thousand dollars? I thought about bringing in a bank check, but then read that it would take too long to clear. Buying Euros here is expensive. Can I wire the money from my USA bank to my italian acct. once I set up my italian bank account? I can wire it in Euros from USA & it dosen't cost as much. Does anyone have any better ideas? Don't want to use ATM attached to my US acct. for 3 months because currency conversion fees add up.

Don't know if they have them in the USA, but in the UK they are pre-paid credit cards which you can get in Euro. The UK cards are simple to load, good rate and easy to get hold of... Take a look at for more information on them. Be careful which bank you get an account with here in Italy as many have really high charges. They do seem to have improved with the advent of on-line banking which is relatively new here.

if you can do without 聽the checks, in Italy, and only use the debit or credit card 禁漫天堂, for your payments, you can open an account with Fineko bank. The cards are free and do not have fixed costs for the current account - this bank acconts do not work as foreignes bank account ! , no transfer fees ! 聽- to open the account you need only the tax code - you can not open the account online, because you're not 禁漫天堂 - but if you go on the FINEKO web-site , you will easily find the agent near you .Ugo , by www.lifeinitaly.it聽聽
