Hi
I am moving to Naples in 11 days to teach English. I know this sounds silly but I have only been there once and I don't have a job just a few interviews. It's going to be a big adventure for me! Can you recommend any good cafes/bars?

Hi Anna ,I went to Naples a few times but it was 15 years ago hen I was working as an au pair in Rome ,and stayed in Naples with the family for a weekend ,so I didnt really get to see many bars while I was there .A good place to start to make connections with friends ,jobs etc would be a local bookshop .Usually most bookshops have a board where you can post messages ,get information about jobs and find people who are intersted in having english or italian lessons.Ive looked on the net and found an interesting site which you might find useful .Its caled "around Naples in English" and has some information on it about all kinds of things ,bars ,clubs ,cafes ,accomodation etc which you might find helpful .
When I lived in Rome ,I started a journal ("A foot in the boot") and I wrote it every day ,about all the things I did ,people I met and all the wonderful ,scary and incredible things that happend to me while I was living there .I wrote 7 volumes of this journal ,and now ,15 years later it gives me so much plesasure to be able to recall those days and remember so well one of the happiest times of my life .I am retuurning to Rome next week for 10 days and will be revisiting a lot of beautiful places and memories from my time there.I do hope you enjoy Naples Anna ,I m sure you will have a wonderful time and the experience will stay with you forever .Will you still come on the boards and let us know how you are getting on?.I'll be thinking of you .Enjoy your great adventure ,love and thoughts ,Jane x x

Dear Anna,
yes it sounds a bit silly only for the fact that many Neapolitans should learn ½ûÂþÌìÌà first. Their mother language! :-)
Where will you be based exactly in Naples ?
I don't know how to answer to your question about cafes and bars. It depends where you are.
Keep in mind that Naples is not a very safe city, but this is another topic.
A safe place where to drink or eat something good is "Vinarium" in via Cappella Vecchia (close to Piazza dei Martiri) and close to my newspaper :-)
There are many places where to go, but I want to be sure to tell you the safests!!!!
Fabrizio

I don't know yet where I will be. I am going with a back pack, a few contacts, my qualifications and some courage. If it doesn't work out I might try Rome but I hope to stay in Naples. When I get there I will let you all know and ask some more questions. Fabrizio, I've just had a look at your website. Very impressive!

A presto
Peter

Caro Peter,

A presto
Peter
PS Il tuo inglese è molto buono. Complimenti.

Same here Fabrizio, I have had a look at your websites. I like the pictures on 'napolinapoli', some of which really capture the essence of Napoli and the region itself. The internet car was typical and amusing!
I also came across some pictures of Procida where my uncle lives and I normally stay for part of my time when in Italy.
The only problem is, look ing at the pictures has made me yearn to return again!
Considering Teaching English in Napoli
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 04/16/2009 - 09:52In reply to A newbie all over again! by Annec
Greetings, friends...
My name is David, someone I've met recently has recommended I try teaching English in Napoli. After having done lots of research on your beautiful city....I am highly convinced that Napoli is the place for me.
I'm from Chicago, although I have been living in Mexico for the past 5 years teaching English at a university. Recently I've hit a wall of sorts and cannot proceed creatively....I feel that Europe is my next step to grow creatively and personally.
This past year I have became really good friends with this French couple that also taught here at the university where I work. They convinced me that I should go teach at the city where they are from...Marseilles, France. Then, I met the brother in-law of Joanna, one of the French teachers who happens to be from Napoli. He is really cool. He told me that I should think about Napoli instead for the richness of the city and the warm and friendly people.
I'd like to hear from the people there if possible. Can you please recommend a language school, or university where I can send my resume? I am seriously leaning towards Napoli instead of Marseilles.
I thank you all so much.
David

Hi David
There are lots of language schools in the area surrounding Naples, especially in Salerno and Sorrento (Google for them all) but this one is actually in the centre of Naples and has good write ups.

I taught English in Naples, in state schools, privately and at the university. Firstly, you must remember that all the good jobs are not won by open selection. I started with St Peters on the Chiaia, and worked up from there. However, you wont be able to teach in Naples schools if you dont have a CELTA or equivalent qualification as all the European courses require this in order to gain funding. The same is true of the PONs run at the university. If you dont have the CELTA you will be earning much less. If you're going to teach in state schools you will need a thick skin and good sense of authority! Having said that, I love Naples and miss it, but it is not the easiest city to live in, especially if you dont look Neapolitan. If you need more info PM me.

Sorry - so he did! I obviously didn't read the post properly - I had other things on my mind yesterday. Apologies.
Ciao Fabrizio, welcome to the board, your English is fine. :)
