English stuff at Lidl

11/15/2010 - 07:35

For those who are so inclined, this week at Lidl there's a feature on English food products (Apple Sauce; Mint Sauce; Mustard; Cheddar Cheese(?)); and quite a few more interesting items. If anyone is coming to Lidl at Castel di Lama; give us a ring and call in for a cuppa! 338 2105315 or jeppo678@virgilio.it Andrew

Seems like the vultures got there first, as according to the guy today, it was already sold out!!! One day after the promotion started. Perhaps their marketing/ordering dept should get it together better. Talking to the wife in Thailand today, it is easily available there, as are so many other things like Oxo etc. Wonder when Italy will get into the real world of other foodstuffs readily available at uninflated prices.

Re: "when Italy will get into the real world of other foodstuffs readily available at uninflated prices." .........I too am amazed at the cost of these things, I understand that the locals will not buy them because they don't want them, but there are times when one feels that prices are indeed inflated. But I'm not sure how much (for instance) Cheddar Cheese(!!) costs in the UK anymore? Having said that...........there are very few things that I miss/need from old blighty, S

And the lidl cheddar is really good. Ive now got 10 packs in the fridge to see me through the winter... Also the blackcurrant jam and the orange and ginger marmalade is worth stocking up on.

"........... cheddar is really good. Ive now got 10 packs in the fridge to see me through the winter ....." If you want to keep it beyond the sell by date - Cheddar freezes well - it may be a bit more crumbly when thawed out, but that's all I used to use it as freezer packs in the cool box when driving down from the UK

There is a VERY similar tasting PRE-PACKED cheese at COAL shops(and also Eurospin)..........our COAL normally stocks it in the refridgerated shelves. It is semi circular in shape and usually about 1 to 3 cms thick. It grates well, toasts very well (as I think it is cows cheese rather than sheeps (?)), and with a bit of raw onion it makes a fine cheese and onion sandwich! It is called: Provolone Valpadana D.O.P. Piccante YUM YUM ! S
