My understanding is that the £5 check in fee is mandatory regardless of whatever you are carrying. You pay with your booking.. You are still allowed one piece of free hand luggage, Note your handbag and indeed sandwiches and pasta from the duty free shop must go inside the bag.Further information here. -
On line check-in for all

I understand that they are doing away with the check in desks and just having bag drops. I pressume they will have to have machines to print out your case lables if you have hold luggage. These have been around for a while. I know BA have used them on Eurpoean flights. The trick is to beat Ryanair at their own game. I have just booked flights for October at £4 . If you pay less than £5 the on-line check in fee is waived and as I have an electron card, the return flight was £8 - hand luggage only of course. I could have paid for a hold bag but that would have been another £10 not as under the old system £10 plus the check -in fee. I think Ryanair have missed that one - or have I let the cat out of the bag now!!

Thankyou to all who replied. Regarding the old separate section for Ryanair, I think that as mine was a genuine query ,and not a moan, it might be useful to one or two people. Another query - I booked flights for September ages ago with one item of hold luggage. Will there still be a normal check in desk for this? I wasn't able to ask to check in online at the timeof course.
HiJust back from Rome/Prestwick return trip and found the following...I had booked and paid for one item of hold luggage as well as the normal hand luggage allowance. I then checked in online and printed my Boarding Pass. On arrival at each airport I still had to join the check-in queue and hand over my boarding pass and suitcase(hold luggage) but did NOT have to pay the check-in fee. They assured me that before the end of 2009 there will be dedicated 'baggage drop' desks seperate from check in for people like me who have done the online thingy.I hope this helpsR

Thankyou. That link is really useful. I think I'll stick with airport check in as I paid for it and as I wont be able to check in online easily for the return journey as it's more than 15 days. It would be nice if they decided to extend the number of days when it's possible to check in online as there isn't always a handy internet cafe. Is it possible to actually check in online at the airport coming back?
