Sarah,

Ligurians are few and far between on this Forum (not enough space with the Puglia mafia;) ) and I don't know of anyone living in western Liguria that frequents this forum. However, we have a holiday home near Imperia and I'm sure you'll be getting a reply from 'cassini' who has a place in Perinaldo.

Anything we can do to help (I'm sure you won't mind Carol!) just send a private message.

Good luck!

Might be worth looking at www.frappr.com to see if anyone is registered in the area you are interested in.

We are in Perinaldo not too far from Bordighera. Its a favourite lunch spot for us by the blue, blue sea. How nice to be building in the area . . . I wish!

A good area to house nest in as there are so many builders' merchants, fabricators of windows, bathroom and kitchen places in Vallecrosia and Camporosso.

Where is your land located?

My parent have a place in Lerici, so i know the area well, and will be making trips back and forth from Bagnone (40 minutes in land in tuscany) to catch up with friends/enjoy the bars/go to the beach. The area is gorgeous and Lerici in particular is one of the most beautiful places I've been in Italy : )
All the best, Will

haven't found the land yet but hoping to find something affordable soon. thanks for hte tip about building materials. yes, love the area, love italy! next we'll need to learn italian! speak french and have been living in southern france for about 6 years. know perinaldo and like it a lot. favorite places are seborga and costarainiera.
any hints and help are greatly appreciated
thanks
sarah

Will, you're lucky to have parents with a place in Leirici! lovely area. like tellaro and of course the cinque terre! would love to look in that area but we need to be nearer to france.
sarah

You will find many people fluent in french or even bi-lingual the nearer you get to the border. Certainly many professionals or commercial people you may come into contact will probably be with a touch of English.

As to finding a building plot very close to Bordighera I expect the local estate agents will be a port of call. I think it is easier to find land in the entroterra or primi collini rather than very close to the sea. Alternatively areas such as Calderodi or Poggi may be possibilities.

Many are listed on the www.bordighera.it website. Of course www.casa.it also lists terreno. There is a great variation of land available at different prices. It depends if it is also prime agricultural land with olives, flowers or doc vines. It can be quite a challenge to avoid the motorway bridges the nearer you get to the sea. Some of the Ventimiglia and Sanremo estate agents will also have land in the area.

Good Luck with the search.

Dear Cassini,
Thanks for the websites. I'll check them out. Hope to be back very soon checking on things again.

Dear Tom and Alison,
Well, you're ahead of me at the moment since you already have a place there but definitely let's be in touch and if any of us finds good people to do anything, let's pass the names on.

Looking forward to more chats with all of you "Ligurians"
Thanks Sarah

I have a book that everyone will love to buy and read! Extra Virgin - amongst the olive groves of Liguria. It's written by Annie Hawes, a young English woman who buys a hillside cottage in the Diano san Pietro area. It's a great tale about the ups and downs of integrating into it all :) I'm so pleased to know there are other Lugurians out there, albeit I'm only a part time one!

And of course there is volume 2 "Ripe for the Picking" and volume 3, where she meets her in-laws in Calabria. Highly recommended. We're also on the La Spezia end of Liguria and have a plot of land 10 minutes from Lerici. Get yourselves invited to the Liguria group by Cassani

Already done Heiko.
Reading Annie Hawes latest book set in Morocco and Algeria at the moment; finding it heavier going than the others - perhaps because of the political background.

Hello Cassini
thank you for inviting me to the Liguria group. Is there a link I should be looking at?! This site is still a bit new to me!

hi i have just bought a house in seborga. and what a place it is. everything clean and tidy. cant wait to get back

Hi there
New to the forum, but have been reading post for a while. We are hoping to purchase in Liguria very soon. We are going out to the area next week 8th -12th April. Have some viewings lined up, but would be very interested to know of any good english speaking agency, near San Remo, as we want to buy as close to this area as possible.

Hi there Nickbass
Thank you for this, will have alook at site now. I have spent the last few weeks searching online for agents. Hopefully we will find something and will keep you updated.
Thanks again

Hi everybody pleased to read your comments, my partner and i are off to Liguria next week to have a look at the area with the intentions of looking at the area with the possibility of buying, we live in italy already and prior to that 4 years in spain. We have an open mind and know that you get more for your money inland but would consider the coast or inland- any advice would be great. Brian/Genna

Welcome Brian and Genna! You are doing the right thing by visiting the area first. Liguria is quite large and there are wonderful towns and cities both on the coast and inland. On the coast, I particularly like Albenga and the Cinque Terre is wonderful, but you also have magic places a bit more inland like Pieve di Teco, or Seborga... just to name a couple. We ended up in Tuscany because we fell in love with a place there, but Liguria was also on our list. Perhaps you will be lucky and you may find something very quickly. But my advice is: Take your time.
Best wishes,

Lots of agencies in Sanremo centre and all along the coast to Ventimiglia, some will speak English many French. Whether they are good or not is another matter - you will still need to check out any property yourself. If you know what you want and your budget and they have it they might be satisfactory or even good - otherwise they are inundated with browsers - after all it is the Riviera dei Fiori - and only take you seriously if you have an appointment to view some of their properties. Essential to know about location. Start by picking up the free newspaper outside agents IL CERCA CASA and see if anything takes your fancy. Otherwise stroll past and look in windows. You of course know about the Casa.it: Annunci immobiliari, vendita e affitto appartamenti, agenzie immobiliari website - that will give you a good indication. Some friends looking a year or so ago, appreciated the Pirelli Agency in Ventimiglia and Bordighera they arranged viewings all along the coast in many locations for them with an English speaker.

Many of the Ligurian real estate agencies have free magazines which you can pick up and study. At least it would give you some basic idea of prices, etc. Do a search here in the Italy Magazine listings as well and as Cassini said, casa.it can also give you some ideas. I think that the secret is to look around as much as you can and compare.

Hi tom and alison,

we are just in the process of extending a 100 year old cottage near Dolceacqua in Liguria. We have two girls aged 6 and 4 and would be happy to share our experiences with you. Luckily our uncle who is italian has been helping us with the renovations. All seems to have gone as well as can be expected. We are going tomorrow to check up on the work.
Regards
Lynn and Andy

hi again everyone

Have just returned from or wedding and I noticed on our trip up to Seborga that there are quite a few properties for sale up the hill towards Sasso, and onwards to Seborga itself. I think Sarah mentioned that this was the area she was interested in? Anyway there seems to be an abundance of properties available! Good luck to all in your search. Our wedding in Seborga was super :) We had our meal at a lovely restaurant, Il Coniglio, which really did us proud :) Highly recommended!

Hi

I would be interested to know how the various parties who went out to Liguria recently got on with their viewings, was it what you expected? how did you find the various estate agents? and which towns/villages appealed to you most.

We are going to this area in the summer so am still researching on the internet and it would be nice to get some feedback from those that have been there recently.

Chris

Hi, we did all this last year and bought our house on a hill. regarding the estate agents, all that we talked to and arranged visits were more than helpful with good and honest advice. The thing that stood out was the subtle difference in the area and valleys, which made a major impact on our decision. Strange but we just felt comfortable and at home in the area we choose, back from the see near Molini di Triora. The agency used Casa Antica in Molini Jenny the owner made the whole process so smooth that you could not believe how simple it was far different from the rip off situation hear in the UK. Good Luck PS the free paper Cassini told you about is great Tony and Julie

All I can say about liguria is that if you are buying on the coast is very expensive. My Mum and Dad went a few years ago with the intention of buying a small flat but gave up. So maybe inland is your best bet. Cinque terre very expensive and very beautiful. I have a friend who is an architect in Chiavari, if needed I can give his details.
Good luck

Paola

Hi Sarah,
My family (Husband and 3 children) have a holiday home in Pigna, Liguria. We'd never even been to the area before but absolutely love it. I have a friend who has some land for sale overlooking the beautiful town of Dolceacqua. She has planning permission to build a house on the land and knows all the local builders. If you are interested I can put you in touch with her.

Hi everybody we had a great trip last time and are going back to look for a week staying in a self catering apartment at Alassio for a week (3-10 June) We have put our apartment on the market in tuscany this week but are in absolutely no rush and intend to keep looking around the area until we sell and then to rent in Liguria until we find what we like. Points made previously are good advice , cheaper inland, coast more expensive but it depends on size of apartment, location, after a few years in Tuscany we would like to be at or near the sea again. This forum is great- open to any advice/ suggestions
