This used to be the case a couple of years ago but not anymore I believe. What you do have to do is to make at least one top-up in a 12 month period. This only has to be for the minimum amount. I've mobiles with both TIM and Vodafone. Did'nt top up my Vodafone for over a year and the sim was cancelled. Was, however, credited with the outstanding balance to a new sim card.

Thanks for the information. I find that the TIM card gives me an O2 signal in the UK, so I could try a call if I am not back in Italy within 6 months.I have had a number of Thai SIM cards over the years, which do not seem to function at all over here and they die if unused after quite a short period, but they are very cheap to replace, so it is only the loss of the number that is a nuisance.

We usually make sure that we text our friend every now and again when we are back in England to make sure that our credit stays on our mobile. It is a "Wind" sim rather than a "Tim" one, but we think it works the same way in respect of keeping our credit instead of losing it all.
