2043 Flight landing reliability

After a lot of trouble landing and non appearence of flights from Ancona due to invisible fog. General opinion seems to agree that this is due to automatic guidence systems not in use at Ancona. I need to travel again in the very near future. I will be flying ryanair from Liverpool so I'm faced with the choice of flying to Rome (ciampino) or Pisa.I would like to of ask the forums experience. Do either of these airports get landings diverted due to poor visibility.

I've flown from Pisa a few times. The most recent was a couple of weeks ago when there was bad fog at the airport. All flights were temporarily suspended but fortunately it cleared and in the end we only left 20 minutes late. However there was an Air France flight due in that was diverted to Genoa and all the departing passengers were being bussed up to Genoa. Don't know if this is a common occurence as it's the only time that it's happened to me.

I recall about three years ago after I had checked in for a Ryanair flight from Pisa to Stansted the airport closed due to strong crosswinds. No flights either in or out of Pisa.

The passengers including an aunt who was flying with B.A. to Gatwick around the same time were well cared for and bussed to Genova.

The Ryanair passengers were catered for differently. They could either choose another airport or use Pisa the following day - seats permitting.

I was also on an incoming ( budget airline)flight diverted from Linate to Bergamo due to fog.Coaches were laid on to transfer passengers to the airport - no stops en route!

In February I will be returning to Italy. I will be going with Ryanair and for the first time I will be landing at Verona/Brescia airport - (Montichiari)Have there been any problems here?
I had hoped to fly to Bologna with Easyjet but it has been taken off.

My daughter and family live near Stansted so would use it fairly frequently.
If I take an infirm elderly aunt to Italy it has to be B.A.

I have just returned to Brescia from Stansted and we were diverted to Bergamo (Milan) as there was fog at Brescia. It wasn't too bad as they were very efficient and we were put on coaches as soon as we landed at Bergamo and we were in Brescia about 1 hour later. In all we were only about 2 hours late.

Apparently this happens quite a lot at Brescia, I don't know what would happen if it was the same in Bergamo

Personally would go for flying into Roma, less risk of cancellation or being diverted from experience and info read on this forum.

Linate is notorious for fog so they developed Malpensa as Milan's second airport but also, I am told, put it in a foggy place! I used to fly in and out of Bergamo on a weekly basis for work and never had any real problems (I dont count a delay of up to an hour as a real problem). We now use Forli a lot and find it very good. Rome Ciampino is also fine. The only problem with it I have found is trying to to get to it via the Grande Riccordo (Rome's version of the M25). Give yourself plenty of time - particularly on a Friday evening!!

The biggest potential problems are (regular) strikes by public sector workers in Italy which can mess up the flights into any airport but we have managed to avoid these - so far

for up to date information on italian air strikes look on the first page of my post on italian air strikes in the travel advice thread.anne 1972 has posted a link to a government site with this info

Thanyou everybody for your replies and suggestions. I will fly to Roma champino and drive to Le Marche
thanks again
