Laterooms.com is a good place to start. I've stayed in an apartment thats on there - called Laguna - for 80 euros a night - it looks out over Cemetery island from the Fondamente Nove.
Do not be tempted by cheaper prices on the Lido or in Mestre..

Many thanks will look on the sita

I have only just found this site Smiler, so I'm still playing with it. (Its on the front of Italy Magazine) However, one thing I have found is that I needed to enter the City in the search, rather than just clicking on the city of you choice.

I like the Hotel Ai mori d'oriente-in the Canneriggio area...around 100 Euro per night. Right on canal, very good seafood restaurants just down the street with tables next to the canal, good service, good breakfast...about 10 min to the train station

Wow you did well to get the Mori D'oriente for 100 euros. It is a very nice hotel and in a quiet part of town. They are offering doubles for 150 in December - usually 220 I think.
I was inspired by this question and felt the need to scratch my Venice itch last night - booked seats from Nottingham for £60 on cheesyjet and found a 2 double bed apartment for 130 euros per night - sleeps up to 6 - for a weekend in December - I love Venice when its cold and moody. He only charged the 2 person charge even though we are taking our son aged 9..

I think its really nice to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel - feels more like being a Venetian (I love food shopping at Rialto and getting 'home' with a parcel of delicious goodies) plus it saves money and there is usually a nice sitting room to hang out in when your legs give up! Most want a 3 night booking but some are very flexible out of the prime season.
One day I'll win the lottery and rent one of those fabulous apartments on the Grand Canal...
If you want a great G Canal view from a hotel that isn't Gritti palace prices I recommend this place - they have 3 great rooms looking out on the GC - best one is room 4, you do have to book a way in advance if you want a weekend - http://www.leonbianco.it/rooms.htm They claim on the site that the G C view rooms are 200 euros but I think I have been quoted up to 250 in the past. Tiny place only 7 rooms, lovely people running it and the best view in the world out your window...
Hope you find somewhere lovely.

Marina,

What a lovely place. I just had to bookmark it. Prices are reasonable given that you share the flat. Great suggestion! BTW, I agree with your view on Venice in the winter... ;)

Cheers,
Stephanie

PS - we stayed 4 nights in the Cavalletto e Doge Orseolo near St Mark's square in February this year. They're usually quite pricey but we found a great deal on www.expedia.co.uk for £240ish each incl flights. Was fantastic!

Hi Stephanie.

I've stayed at the Cavaletto e Doge a couple of years back - it is nice but I found the gondola station where they all moor up for the night just below incredibly noisy - theres only so many O Sole Mios that you can take!

Fabulous big bed though.

Hi,

I have stayed in appartments in Venice and Rome through www.sleepinitaly.com. They were both very good, almost like staying at a friends appartment, and they were relatively good value. I find that staying in an appartment allows you more freedom and you can pretend for a few days that you live in the city!

Hope this helps.

Oh sole mio indeed... :D

We were lucky in that our window overlooked a tiny quiet piazza where you could watch locals go to the bank or into a small cafe! And we managed to take photos of lovely snowfall & snow-covered rooftops late at night as it was pitch dark! :)

Agree on the size of the beds...

Does anyone know, or can they recommend a hotel that's "top notch"...... we want to feel like a Doge! :D

It's been one of Kim's desires to travel to Venice & I'd like to do it in style, so any recommendations are most welcome.

You could have a look throught the most highly rated ones on Trip advisor -

Friends have stayed at the San Clemente Palce which is on its own island with free motor boat transfers to the main part of venice. Very nice when its hot as it has a lovely pool. The Cipriani is supposed to be wonderful but incredibly pricy.

The Foscari Palace has just been renovated and has a great position on the Grand Canal - you could go for a front room there. Or another G canal location is this place which seems quite reasonable

Or rent a really lovely apartment - theres quite a few cos doing 3 day lets or even 2 out of season -
