1948 Thinking and planning ahead

Hello all

I am about to retire next year and, having been to the Livorno and Versilia areas several times, I am looking to move there.

Firstly, I would look to rent a place for 6 months or a year whilst renting out my place here in England. Then, if I like living there, I would plan to sell here and buy in Italy.

Does anyone know if there are people who need house-sitters or someone to take care of houses and gardens? I am a very practical person and a qualified (English) electrician! Not to mention a skilled organist too!

Hi RossHeyhouseWill and welcome to the forum.

There are a plenty of people who are either already retired or planning on retiring in Italy and I'm sure they'll give you a lot of practical advice and tips on the logistics.

Your plan to rent for 6 months to make sure you like living in Italy before selling up and making a permanent move is a good one. Are you definately thinking of Livorno or are you open to other areas of Italy?

I would think your skills would be in demand in areas with a largish UK population. I know that there have been several posts where people have been looking for skilled tradesmen who speak English. Haven't yet seen a post for a skilled organist however;)

Good luck with your plans:)

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your plans. We rented when we first came out here, good idea to find out first if the area you have chosen is right for you.
Oh and everyone on the forum thinks where they have chosen is the best!!
sometimes this makes for some interesting posts!!

Thanks all of you! Hope to hear from plenty of people in due course!

I've been to the area a number of times over the last four years, both in and out of season - including February! - and I have not changed my mind!

Quite willing to "house-sit" or rent to make sure I have chosen right!

However, being an organist, there are not many churches with good instruments where I could play!

Thanks anyway

An electrician in my house would be good but it's in Callabria.

Right down in the south of Italy - I've never been there but hope to be passing through the area next year!

Incidentally, I am also interested in the area south of Livorno towards Rome

Anyone else read this message at all, please?

Not long before the big day now and I keep on reading all your comments about living in Italy - I am envious!

But not for long!

Hi

I've read your post but no can do!! We're in the south too! A lot further south than Rome , but I wish you well! At least, I can say, you've not picked a better country in which to live in!!

I have read with interest about people moving - and indeed those who have moved -to live in Italy. Like others I am retired (very early!!) I would be interested in renting intially to get a better feel for the country but can only find sites which have holiday rentals as opposed to short term residential lettings. Can anyone advise me as to how one can find such properties to let - local newspapers, agents or other means? I have no particular area in mind but prefer quieter areas away from the traditional touristy areas - Le Marche looks good as does Calabria and anywhere in between - so plenty of choice! Any ideas, suggestions and advice gratefully received - particularly on such a damp and cold afternoon in North Wales!

Dear Merfyn, I have a house in Callabria, a little mountain village that I would be intersested in renting out. I have planned to go there for Easter alone and will be going for my summer hols. It has four large rooms and 2 attic rooms and a terrace. It can sleep 10 but the two attic rooms are cold in winter. If you want any more information let me know. I am not sure how to find private links but there is a way so please feel free to find mine.
Regards,
Carolyn
