I heard on the radio today that the folk of Assisi have decided to adopt graves at Commonwealth War Cemetery. BBC Radio 4 reported that the 'Adopt a Hero' initiative persuaded local people to take the place of the dead soldiers' real relatives, who invariably live too far away to visit more than once or twice in a lifetime.
It seems that over 300 graves have already been allocated to local people who agree to visit 'their' grave and leave a flower there.
I visited the trenches & cemeteries in Belgium as a school-boy & it left its mark; I find it all very humbling.

Very much so. Visted Verdun a few years ago and the Normandy beaches last summer. Both left a similar mark.
