FAI Spring Days: 750 Cultural Sites Open for Free

| Fri, 03/21/2014 - 00:00

750 cultural sites throughout Italy will be open to the public for free this weekend, in celebration of FAI Spring Days (22-23 March).

FAI stands for (½ûÂþÌìÌà Environment Fund), an organization that helps preserve and maintain Italy’s national heritage and cultural assets.

The locations, many of which are generally closed to the public, include public parks, monuments, churches, palaces, castles, villas and gardens.

The initiative, in its 22nd edition, is dedicated this year to Roman Emperor Augustus, as 2014 marks 2,000 years since his death. 120 of the 750 open sites are related to the history of the first Roman emperor. In Rome, the Mausoleum of Augustus, closed to the public for years, the Theatre of Marcellus, the only remaining theater of ancient Rome, and the Forum of Augustus, where art performances celebrated the emperor’s glory, will all be open.
