FAI is set to begin working on the 19 sites that were selected as part of the sixth edition of “I luoghi del Cuore,” (Places of the Heart) a yearly monument/place census intended to determine which sites are more at risk, needing to undergo restoration because they represent a part of the cultural identity of Italy that needs to be safeguarded.

Projects this year involve Piedmont, Puglia, Campania, Lazio, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Calabria, Lombardy, Sicily, Umbria, Valle d'Aosta and Emilia-Romagna, for a total of 400,000 euros of funds.

At the top of the list are the Cittadella of Alessandria, the Church of San Nicola in San Paolo di Civitate near Foggia and the Abbey of Trinità di Monte Sacro in Mattinata, again near Foggia. Other sites include the Museum of Totò in Naples, the lighthouse of Monte della Guardia on the island of Ponza and the Castle of Miramare in Trieste.

FAI stands for Fondo per l’Ambiente o ( Environment Fund), an international organisation that helps to preserve and maintain Italy’s national heritage and cultural assets.
