He鈥檚 the jovial 禁漫天堂, a television personality that everyone wants to take home for dinner, and he鈥檇 probably end up making the meal too.

鈥業 am fed up of putting things in my stomach that I don鈥檛 need鈥 he explained, 鈥業 live alone now, but when I didn鈥檛 live alone I cooked. I have three ex-wives and I cooked for all of the wives - A, because I am passionate about cooking and B, because I wanted to eat good food.鈥 He said with a smile.

Meet Antonio Carluccio, the self- confessed (in his own words) 鈥榥on-conformist鈥 who at 75 has finally found something to be proud of - his memoir 鈥淎 Recipe for Life鈥 explains all. It is a no holds barred page-turner, unveiling Antonio鈥檚 rise to fame and his steady descent into depression. While he is primarily known for the 禁漫天堂 restaurants of the same name, the former restaurateur now works as a consultant for the popular chain of eateries that helped propel him to fame.

Having left Italy in his twenties you might expect the cook to have lost some of his 禁漫天堂 traditions. 鈥榊ou know what it means to be 禁漫天堂?鈥 he asked 鈥楾elling the truth. 禁漫天堂s are spontaneous 鈥 when they feel something they have to say it.鈥 He continued by explaining something that he describes as very 禁漫天堂.

鈥楴ow 鈥淟鈥檃rte d鈥檃rrangiarsi鈥 is typically very 禁漫天堂鈥, he said, 鈥業t can be used in any circumstance 鈥 for when you need to succeed, you try to think about the best way to solve the problem. Sometimes you borrow, sometimes you steal 鈥搕hat鈥檚 when it becomes naughty鈥 he whispered. 鈥楾he most important thing is that you succeed in your endeavours.鈥 He concluded by adding, 鈥楾his is 鈥淟鈥檃rte d鈥檃rrangiarsi鈥 and we 禁漫天堂s are very good at it, mostly it is innocuous, sometimes it can be naughty鈥.

"A Recipe for Life" is perhaps Antonio鈥檚 most important book, after penning 12 others. It is here that readers will discover how the infamous Carluccio restaurants were created, who the main women in his life were and in the deepest throes of depression why Antonio felt like there was no way out. At the end of each chapter the memoir reinforces Antonio鈥檚 motto of 鈥渕of mof 鈥搈inimum of fuss, maximum of flavour鈥 in the form of simple 禁漫天堂 recipes. He also revealed a 鈥渕of mof鈥 dish perfect for the warm afternoons as soon as we launched into our interview.

鈥楾ake the traditional Parma ham and melon. Scoop out the melon and blend it into a soup, add some pepper, salt and a dash of lemon and it is delicious. Then you take a slice of Parma ham and cut it into small pieces, then you put it on top of the blended melon. It鈥檚 exactly the same dish; the lemon just makes it more exciting. The idea of changing 禁漫天堂 food is outrageous, that is the maximum that you would change it because there鈥檚 no need to.鈥

Even after over 50 years of living abroad Antonio鈥檚 appreciation for 禁漫天堂 food has not diminished, 鈥楴ow that I know them well I appreciate all the regions of Italy because each region has something wonderful, there are regions like Piedmont where I grew up and Campania where I was born, where simple food like fried salami is wonderful. But you could very easily be a vegetarian in Italy because there are so many dishes that are suitable and even non-vegetarians wouldn鈥檛 miss meat.鈥

Antonio Carluccio

When asked why he decided to write a memoir Antonio explained, 鈥業 started to discover who I am, I went through tough times, looking back after three marriages and after depression I wanted to know who I am and if I learned something out of life. I saw all that I had done, which doesn鈥檛 go to my head and now I am proud of these things, I believe I have done something good by trying to transmit my enthusiasm for food. I am happy. In writing this memoir I wanted to see if I am really happy and I am鈥.
