In a lawsuit perfectly timed to coincide with World Nutella Day, a California mother is suing the brand for allegedly claiming to be a health food.
World Nutella Day, a fan-organized holiday created to celebrate the beloved ½ûÂþÌìÌà treat, took place on Saturday February 5th. But one woman in the United States is certainly not a devotee of the chocolate-hazelnut spread. Last week, she filed a lawsuit against Ferrero, the maker of Nutella.
In her lawsuit, the mother claims that she was "shocked to learn that Nutella was in fact, not 'healthy, nutritious' food, but instead was the next best thing to a candy bar, and that Nutella contains dangerous level of saturated fat."
Children all over Italy start their days with Nutella on bread for breakfast, but it should come as no great surprise that the chocolate spread is not actually health food. A quick look at the label will show that Nutella’s main ingredients are sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, and cocoa.
With such obvious information on every bottle, it’s unlikely that the class action lawsuit against Ferrero will go very far, but for those looking for a healthier version of the dessert, it’s possible to make the spread yourself.
